A turning point for the social-democratic left and in the multi-party race for the 2027 presidential election: with 66 per cent of the vote, Raphael Glucksmann has dominated the primaries and is emerging as a potential challenger in the two-horse race between Le Pen and Melenchon. In the vote, which was delayed by a cyberattack on Friday, the MEP defeated, amongst others, the Socialist Party secretary Olivier Fauvre, who managed only 14 per cent.
‘This result sends a strong message: a Left that remains true to its values is capable of uniting, governing and winning,’ Glucksmann declared shortly after the victory emphasising that ‘our true opponent is the far right, and we will unite to lead the fight’
Victory marks a historic exception for the Socialist Party
This victory marks a historic exception for the Socialist Party, which for the first time will be backing a candidate who is not officially a member of the party; moreover, it is interesting to note how Glucksmann positions himself in direct opposition to, and in a clear break with, Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Indeed, Glucksmann has opposed any alliance with the radical left and strenuously defends support for Ukraine in the face of Russia, whilst also distinguishing himself by denouncing unfair Chinese competition and the repressive system implemented by Beijing. It will be interesting to see how Glucksmann can mobilise votes in his favour without paving the way to the Élysée for Marine Le Pen, who is currently leading in the polls with 34 per cent of the vote.
