German presidential elections will happen on the 30th of January 2027. The current president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier cannot, after his two terms, run as a candidate anymore so the path is clear for a new president. No official candidates have been chosen yet. SPD (the Social Democratic Party of Germany) has brought up the possibility to have, for the first time, a woman as a head of state of Germany. Also a petition for a candidacy of author Hape Kerkeling has been signed for 160000 times. Kerkeling himself believes that even the idea of having a queer person in the highest state office would benefit the diversity and freedom in society.

The federal president is elected by the Federal Convention [Bundesversammlung] This is the only task of this assembly and its members are elected by the parliaments of the 16 federal states of Germany. Some of them are politicians but also celebrities and public figures may be included.
