Embattled leader of the UK Greens Zack Polanski has faced another major challenge to his leadership after the party conference last month voted in the motion recognizing Zionism as a form of racism. Furthermore, resolution has strengthened the party’s position on the single-state solution in favor of the democratic Palestinian state and a full arms embargo on Israel. A move that has caused major friction with the Jewish community, the European Green movement, and the UK government as the motion itself becomes a party policy till 2028 (the year of the next party convention when the party manifesto would be revised). In a televised interview, Polanski has reassured the viewers that he would stand by party policy even though he would personally prefer to amend it.
Reversible fortunes of the British politics
Polanski, who just at the beginning of this year was seen as one of two frontrunners for the highest office in the UK, has seen another setback to his ambitions. After losing the most recent Holborn and St. Pancras by-elections, more questions arose about if the recent frontrunner could actually galvanize his media popularity in the votes for the party rather than public outrage. A question that would play a detrimental role for the oldest European Green Party in 2029 general elections, especially in light of its leadership’s inability to achieve even a basic prerequisite for their Downing Street ambition, such as a seat in Westminster.
