In the most recent report by the National Cyber Security Center (NCSC), it is confirmed that the UK has become another target of the cyberattack that hit European supermarkets on Monday. As per the NCSC statement, they have been informed about the number of instances where vulnerable equipment has been targeted by the hackers. This far the British Association of the Independent Meat Suppliers have informed that out of 300 of the members of the association, at least a couple have been informed about “defrosting” incidents regarding their fridges. Luckily, due to fridges not being loaded with any products, the scale of the material damages to the firms was limited.

Hybrid attacks growing exponentially

As the European governments report the rising number of the hybrid threats to both national and European security, the scale and shape of these attacks continue to evolve. As the unfriendly political entities try to impact the daily life of the European citizens in an attempt to cause confusion and fear among the general population. At the same time, the recent story of the cyber attacks at the numerous European supermarkets shows that the forces adversely are continuing to become more sophisticated and direct in their attacks on Europe. With the logistics and supplies of the supermarkets becoming a new key component of the hybrid operations. In the end, even though the impact of such attacks is purely limited to the distribution of the groceries, it indicates the rising concerns regarding how well defended the European critical infrastructure is in the face of the new digital threats.

Viktor Bondarenko Hi Everyone, My Name is Viktor and I am a young graduate from the Faculty of Business economics. I have a great interest in the contemporary policy making which I like to analyze through the prism of the historic trends. As such during my studies I have put a major emphasis on the study of the history of the European and North Atlantic region in general to understand how the last 100 years of the international policy making created an economic and political architecture of the modern EU.
